Morecambe Hold Crawley

Morecambe battled to earn a 1-1 draw against promotion chasers Crawley Town on Wednesday night.

Morecambe started the game the better of the two sides and found themselves in front inside 20 minutes. Andy Fleming managed to poke the ball into the net to give the visitors a shock lead.

Morecambe thrashed Crawley 6-0 last time we met and the man who scored a hat-trick that day, Danny Carlton had the chance to put the Shrimps further ahead but, like so many times this season he failed to test the goalkeeper as his shot went wide.

That miss was almost punished immediately. Less than a minute later Crawley had the chance to equalise when Kyle McFadzean`s headed effort was pushed away by Barry Roche and Roche again managed to push away the rebounded effort to keep Morecambe ahead.

Scott Neilson came on for the home side as a half time substitute and made an instant impact by levelling the score with a volley that had Barry Roche beaten.

The second half was mainly played in Morecambe`s half of the pitch as Crawley dominated proceedings.

Jordan Burrow had Morecambe`s best, no, only shot on target in the second half when he was denied his first Football League goal when his effort was cleared off the line by Dean Howell.

Crawley failed to capitalise on their 15 shots on target and when the whistle for full time went with the score still at 1-1 Morecambe were more than pleased to have gained a valuable point away from home.

The result keeps Morecambe 14th in the table with 41 points, just 9 adrift of the 50 point target set back in August and well on course to retaining Football League status. Crawley move up one place to 5th.

Morecambe face a tricky home game with Southend on Saturday before entertaining bottom club Dagenham & Redbridge on Tuesday night.

Subs: Kuipers, Simpson (76), Akinde (45), Batt, Nielsen (45).
