Quality Lacking Where It Mattered
Morecambe were looking to end a run of form that has seen defeats become the norm of late when Rochdale came to the Globe Arena on Saturday.
We couldn't manage this with a 2-1 defeat suffered....
Not only have we suffered several league two defeats recently we also bowed out of the FA cup last weekend, something Jim Bentley wanted a response to.
He was honest in his assessment that he felt he got that response but the quality was lacking and Dale exposed this to get the win, Bentley said: 'I wanted a response after losing in the FA Cup last week and I think I got that.
'There was no lack of effort and commitment but we did lack a bit of quality where it mattered and they took full advantage.
'They just seemed to have a bit extra when it mattered and once they got ahead it gave them a shot in the arm and they scored a good second goal which obviously gave them the upper hand.'
A goal as late as the one we got left us with too much to do, and he knew that too.
From the sides we have faced thus far this season Bentley rates Rochdale as the best and has tipped them to be there or thereabout when the season ends.
He added: 'To our credit we had a go after that but we didn't pass the ball well enough when it mattered and although we got one back we gave ourselves too much to do.
'They are a very good side, probably the best I have seen this season, and sometimes you have to put your hands up and say that. I think they will definitely be up there at the end of the season.'
I think that Bentley has a point about Rochdale, and you do also have to sometimes admit the better side won, which they did.
Two quick goals in the second half, Mark Hughes' own goal and one from Scott Hogan left us with a mountain to climb. It was reduced to a molehill with Padraig Amond's last minute effort but it was too little too late.
A third defeat in four league games means we have now slipped down to eighth since a point we were moments away from going top!
